Poly Styrene

Poly Styrene dies at 53

BRITISH PUNK SINGER POLY STYRENE, was best known as the energetic frontwoman of the seminal punk rockband X-Ray Spex, has died after a battle with spine and breast cancer. She was 53. This is a major loss, right up there with the loss of Joey Ramone. I remember just where I was when I heard the throttling news of his demise over the car radio. Damn…

In 1976, Styrene (real name: Marianne Elliott-Said) formed X-Ray Spex after watching the Sex Pistols perform. The group, best known for the song “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!” released their debut album, Germ Free Adolescents, in 1978, before disbanding. Two years later, she recorded a solo album, Translucence, before dropping out of the public spotlight and joining the Hare Krishnas, having always been a strict vegetarian and so-called peace punk.

She released a solo album, Generation Indigo, just last month.
